With a 4-1 penalty shootout victory over Uruguay in the finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey, France became the first nation ever to have won all five FIFA tournaments.
France had won the Olympic soccer gold in 1984, clinched the FIFA World Cup ‘mundial’ in 1998 at the expense of Brazil while they claimed the Confederation Cups in 2001 and 2003. The cadet French team won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2001 in Trinidad and Tobago.
Alphonse Areola, became the hero of the night after a 120-minute goalless situation as he saved two of La Celsete’s spot-kicks, while Dimitri Foulquier’s kick earned Les Bleuets the U-20 trophy for the first time.
Former world champions, the Black Satellites of Ghana had clinched the bronze with a 3-0 win over hard fighting Iraq.
